Mad-Eye Moody Costume: How to Make Your Own at Home
The world of Harry Potter is full of distinctive characters, but there are perhaps none that have such a distinctive appearance and have such an unforgettable introduction as Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody. Even when he’s being impersonated by Barty Crouch Jr. in the pages of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Mad-Eye Moody strikes an impressive, imposing figure – and actor Brendan Gleeson does an incredible job of bringing this character to the silver screen.
If you admire this character whose mantra is “constant vigilance,” who inspires many young witches and wizards to do good work fighting the Dark Arts, and who falls in the line of duty protecting the Chosen One, you might want to put together a Mad-Eye Moody costume for your next event whether that’s Halloween, a fancy dress party, or a convention.
Before you dig deep into your trunk with seven locks to find all the pieces you need, I can help. Below you’ll find all of the items you need to put together a Mad-Eye Moody costume, updated with accurate links as of early 2022. (If you discover a broken link or unavailable item, please let me know in the commentS!) Soon you’ll be inspiring both terror and awe among the people dressed up as other Harry Potter characters around you.

Mad-Eye Moody Costume Item List

Building a Mad-Eye Moody costume is more challenging than other Harry Potter characters. The costume requires more elaborate pieces of clothing, which translates into a heftier price tag. Also, Alastor Moody wears numerous layers of clothes and has a few “magical” devices that help make his look so distinctive.
Here’s the list of all the items you need to look like Mad-Eye Moody:
- Jacket: COSMOVIE or AGLAYOUPIN or DarcChic
- Shirt
- Trousers: Men’s or Women’s
- Shoes: Men’s or Women’s
- Magic Blue Eye: Antique gold monocle eyepatch and Blue acrylic eyeball
- Wand
- Hip flask
- Walking Stick
- Wig

Let’s start with the color palette. I’m sure you’ve noticed that the costumes of fictional characters stick to a color scheme throughout the movies. In Alastor’s case, he always wears brownish clothes. This color should guide you when choosing the garments of your Mad-Eye Moody costume.
A long brown coat is the first thing you need. I’ve found three stunning options on Amazon. This COSMOVIE jacket looks gorgeous, and you can have it custom-made in your size. The second alternative is from AGLAYOUPIN; it’s pretty similar to the first option, although the brown is a little darker. It’s also cheaper. The last option is from DarcChic. This one boasts a more Victorian Gothic look, but it still gets the job done.
Next, you’ll have to find a black shirt to replace the black leather jacket. I like this one from Amazon. Next, you’ll also need a pair of trousers. Dickies has these excellent trousers for both men and women.
Finally, you’ll have to wear a pair of brown shoes. I love these from TOMS. I included lace-up boots for men and a pair of stunning wedge booties for women.
Mad-Eye Moody Costume Accessories
Accessories are essential when you want to dress like Mad-Eye Moody. The wizard has truly distinctive looks, and his accessories are precisely what make him unmistakable.
First and foremost, you need his magical blue eye. No Mad-Eye Moody costume would be complete without it. I couldn’t find a replica of his eye device, so you’ll have to resort to DIY methods. I found an antique gold monocle eyepatch and a blue acrylic eyeball on Amazon. All you have to do is glue the eye to the monocle, and boom, you have an authentic magical eye!
Next, you need a wand. The Noble Collection sells a stunning recreation of Alastor Moody’s wand, or you can check out this Universal Studios version. You’ll also need a hip flask and walking stick. This stainless steel flask looks very similar to the one Moody uses, and this wooden staff will definitely make you look the part.
Finally, you need a wig. I found this one on Amazon that even has the “messy” look.
Mad-Eye Moody Pre-Made Costumes
Buying a pre-made costume is another good alternative if you want to avoid finding the clothes and accessories to build your own.
I found this Mad-Eye Moody pre-made costume on Amazon. It comes with a suede coat and vest, so you’ll still have to find the rest of the accessories. Unfortunately, the costume isn’t currently available; however, it used to, so it’s worth bookmarking.
And with that, you have everything you need to put together your own Mad-Eye Moody costume – or buy one if that’s more your style. Have any questions about this DIY Mad-Eye Moody costume guide? Let me know in the comments!
