9 Harry Potter Wedding Passages for your Special Day

For many people, their wedding day is one of the most important days of their lives. It is, after all, one of the few days you make a truly life-changing decision in a single moment, by committing your love to your partner in front of friends, family, and – should your beliefs hold this true – the god to whom you pledge your faith.

But no pressure! 😅

Yes, your wedding is important, but it is also a unique celebration of you and your spouse. That means that you should work together to design a day that honors the love you two have, whatever that may be or how it may look. For Harry Potter fans, that may mean working some Harry Potter wedding passages into your special day; these can be as subtle or overt as you choose.

As a recently married person myself, I know how stressful planning a wedding can be – but adding in Harry Potter wedding passages is easy if you have any control over the script for your ceremony. Below you’ll find nine of my favorite quotes about love and union from the Harry Potter series, plus a sample ceremony script that works many of them into a beautiful moment of commitment between you and your future spouse.

Read on to take a little stress out of your wedding planning process – this part of your day is about to be ticked off that massive to-do list that comes with planning a wedding!

A Quote to Begin the Ceremony

“We are gathered here today to celebrate the union of two faithful souls…”

This quote is spoken by the officiant at Bill and Fleur’s wedding in the beginning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; while there are lots of ways to open a wedding ceremony, I really like this one because it mentions the “union of two faithful souls.” This is a different phrase than I’ve ever heard before and really encapsulates the kind of bond you might want to bring into your marrage – it’s a union that requires faith in the bond and in each other.

Obviously, if you’re putting a few Harry Potter wedding passages into your ceremony, this is a subtle one that you and your future spouse will recognize but which might not be as overt as others.

A Quote about the Power of Love

Harry Potter Wedding Passages

“You are protected, in short, by your ability to love.”

How many times did we hear Dumbledore explain this to Harry? As we discuss a lot in my Harry Potter podcast, love is one of the most important forces in the wizarding world – even more than magic. It’s what keeps Harry safe and alive so many times, despite his frustration with what he thinks is a weakness.

If you’re about to get married, you probably agree with Dumbledore that love is not weakness; it’s one of the things we need most to help weather the storms of life. For this reason, finding a way to work this phrase into your ceremony can serve as a reminder of the day about the many powers that love brings into even our Muggle lives.

A Quote about the Power of Unity

“We only are as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.”

You might need to rework this Harry Potter wedding passage to make it fit in your ceremony, but I thought it was worth bringing up even though the actual quote has nothing to do with love or marriage.

Dumbeldore says this quote in one of the Harry Potter movies as a reminder to the students of Hogwarts, but the quote works equally well as part of your vows or said by your celebrant to remind the whole audience about how your union will make you both stronger people.

A Quote about the Specialness of Love

“It is impossible to manufacture or imitate love.”

While introducing his students to some of the most complex potions in the wizarding world, Professor Slughorn shows them Amortentia – the love potion. Despite its nickname, this potion doesn’t create true, abiding love; nothing can do that but the commitment and care of two people.

For this reason you might want to work this quote into your Harry Potter-themed wedding ceremony somehow; it’s a good reminder that the love that you and your future spouse bring to the relationship is true and cannot be manufactured and imitated.

A Quote about the Mystery of Love

Harry Potter Wedding Passages

“There is a room in the Department of Mysteries that is kept locked at all times. It contains a force that is at once more wonderful and more terrible than death, than human intelligence, than forces of nature. It is also, perhaps, the most mysterious of the many subjects for study that reside there.”

If you’re willing to have very obvious Harry Potter wedding passages in your ceremony, you might want to include this one from the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In it, Dumbedore is telling Harry about the various rooms of the Department of Mysteries and why there was one door Harry couldn’t open during his time there. That was the room of the Love Room, which is not as sleezy 1970s as it sounds!

Instead, it’s a reminder that love is so powerful and mysterious, that even wizards have not yet been able to uncover all of its truths. Love defies human intellegence, is more powerful than nature and death, and helps give meaning to our lives.

If you want to find a way to work this into your ceremony, it will serve as a reminder to all attending about the incredible love that you and your soon-to-be-spouse share.

A Quote about the Importance of Love

“Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and above all, all those who live without love.”

For another overt Harry Potter wedding passage, you might want to include this quote about how love is part of what gives our lives meaning. Dumbledore says it to Harry when discussing Voldemort, whose entire life was marked by an absence of love that left him a shell of a man, warped and twisted.

As you’re about to embark on married life, you obviously believe in how important love is to both you and your partner, so working this into your script will remind you both that you’re committing to keep your love healthy since it’s so important to your marriage.

A Quote about Your Commitment to Love

“Until the very end.”

While this Harry Potter quote might not seem to fit in a wedding ceremony – it’s what James says to Harry as he walks to meet Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest – it is in fact the perfect way to end your wedding vows.

If you choose to write your own vows, you and your spouse could each end your vows with this phrase to declare how far you will go for each other – til you meet Death and walk away as equals.

A Quote about the Persistence of Love

Harry Potter Wedding Passages

“After all this time? Always.”

Arguably the most famous quote about love in the entire Harry Potter series, we all know where this one comes from: The Prince’s Tale in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. *sob*

If you can find a way to work this call-and-response between you and your spouse into your wedding ceremony, any Harry Potter fan attending will recognize it instantly, and you’ll all be reminded of a love so strong that it drove a seemingly terrible man to great lengths to protect the woman he loved – and her son.

A Quote to End the Ceremony

“I declare you bonded for life.”

As you wrap up the ceremony, you could go with the ol’ “you may now kiss the bride” or you could include a final Harry Potter wedding passage to wrap it up. Like the opening quote I mentioned, this line is said by the celebrant at Bill and Fleur’s wedding and I think it’s a beautiful way to mark the moment when your union is sealed.

It encapsulates so much: your bond, your life together, and the commitment you’re making through all that will come. What better way to end your ceremony and let the festivities begin?

Complete Harry Potter Wedding Ceremony Script

Given all of these Harry Potter wedding passages, you might wonder how to put them together into a single ceremony script. Below I’ve taken a stab at it – though you should obviously modify this to match your own wedding style and the unique partnership you and your future spouse share. Hopefully this will get you started, but you’ll end up with something truly unique and a beautiful representation of your love.

I left each of the Harry Potter wedding passages within this script in italics, so it would be easy to see how I worked them into the overall flow of the ceremony.
