Welcome, dear witches, wizards, and muggles alike! If the wand has chosen you to portray none other than Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore himself, then you’ve stumbled upon the right enchanting corner of the internet.
After all, it’s no secret that to craft a costume embodying the essence of the greatest Headmaster Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has ever seen is not just a case of ‘swish and flick’.
Dumbledore, the wizard who was always more than what met the eye, was not only known for his wisdom and power, but also for his distinct, unforgettable style.
With a pinch of patience, a generous spoonful of enthusiasm, and a hearty sprinkle of love for the wizarding world, crafting your Dumbledore costume will be a challenge you’ll meet head-on, akin to a daring Gryffindor. Let’s delve into the wonderful wizarding world of costume-making – no Invisibility Cloak needed.
Dumbledore Costume Item List
If you have your heart set on making your own Albus Dumbledore costume, you’ll need a bit of imagination to create it. Because, as I said above, it’s hard to find the exact pieces for the costume.
Nonetheless, I’ve tried my best and found clothes that resemble the character’s as much as possible. Check the list below:
- Simple silver velvet robe
- Elaborate silver robe
- Purple moon cloak
- Tasseled hat (this is one of the few true Dumbledore costume items I found)
- Loafers: Option 1 or Option 2
- Wig & Beard
- Half-Moon Spectacles (opt for gold!)
- Dumbledore’s Wand (aka the Elder wand!)
Dumbledore Costume: Clothes
Dumbledore is known for wearing eye-catching robes and long cloaks; these are the foundations of his outfit. I found this velvet robe on Amazon – of course, go for the silver/gray color to get close to Dumbledore’s look. For an even more dramatic look, you can check out this one, also from Amazon. It has more vibrant colors and so much flowing material.
Now, let’s move on to the cloak. This purple moon cloak from Amazon reminds me of the one that Dumbledore wore when delivering Harry to the Dursleys back at the beginning of Sorcerer’s Stone.
The beloved Headmaster of Hogwarts also wears a tassel hat. I found this re-creation on Amazon, which looks great! It is handcrafted and has detailed stitching and orange tassel work. Now, the shoes. I got two options of men’s loafers. This pair has a crushed velvet finish, and these have a satin band and trim for a more sophisticated look – maybe they’re Dumbledore’s everyday shoes and Yule Ball shoes!
Dumbledore Costume: Accessories
As I always say, the devil is in the details. The one accessories that cannot be missing from your Dumbledore costume are the hair and beard. In the last movies, Dumbledore’s hair is long, silver, and flowing, with a beard to match. This greyish wig and beard set “for wizards” will add an extra touch to your look; it does have. vaguely Galdalf look too, so you might want to put a tie around the beard, as actor Michael Gambon does in his movie portrayal of Dumbledore.
Oh, and we can’t forget about his half-moon spectacles, over which he peers Harry and other students, and his wand. These half-moon reading glasses are a fantastic alternative.
Last but not least, you need Dumbledore’s wand – THE wand – the Elder wand. You can purchase an official Dumbledore wand to ensure it’s accurate to the movie prop and everyone knows exactly whose wand it is.
Pre-Made Dumbledore Costumes
The truth is, putting together your own Dumbledore costume isn’t as easy as other characters. It’s quite a challenge finding the right garments that will give that Dumbledore vibe.
That’s why you may be better off buying a pre-made costume. I actually found two options on Amazon; this one (left, above) is definitely the better one by far. It is a replica and features some great silver and satin detailing on the robe.
If you’re not feeling that particular Dumbledore vibe, here’s the other “Dumbledore” costume I found (right, above).
In both cases, you’ll still need some accessories to finish your costume – the wig, wand, and glasses, at a minimum – but you can use these as a starting point to make it really clear who you’re dressing up as!
